Understanding Newborn Sleep Patterns: How To Establish a Healthy Routine

Some newborns are excellent sleepers. They spend much of their time getting sleep and the rest eating. However, not every newborn comes on a healthy sleep schedule. At Angel Pediatrics, serving Anthem, AZ, and the surrounding region, Dr. David Yip stresses the importance of adequate sleep for your little one. This is what you should know about newborn sleep patterns and how to get your little one on a routine as part of a healthy newborn care routine.

General Information

Most people notice their newborn will sleep a great deal. Usually, as the infant grows, their sleep changes, and they need less of it. They then spend more time "exploring" and learning.

Typically, most parents notice their newborn will sleep much of their first few months of life, usually sleeping 16 to 17 hours per day. They only tend to wake up every few hours to eat.

At this stage, there isn't a set schedule that every newborn will follow. And most of them will wake up a few times throughout the night to eat. A majority of newborns won't grow out of this until around three to four months, with some babies stopping this habit even later.

Why Sleep Patterns Could Change

In general, newborns wake every two to three hours to eat. While some changes to sleep could indicate a health concern, sometimes, a baby waking up more frequently is due to a growth spurt. Changes during development and overstimulation can also cause them to deviate from their normal sleep pattern.

Developing a Sleep Schedule

It can be difficult to keep up with household chores, get enough sleep, complete self-care tasks, take care of your other children, and any other responsibilities if your bundle of joy isn't sleeping on a set schedule.

Fortunately, with some newborn care tips, you can help your little one get on routine.

For one, make sure your little newborn is eating enough. You can keep them awake by giving them some tummy time before you begin feeding. This gives them time to wake up first. It also helps not to swaddle them while they're nursing or taking a bottle. You could rub their feet to keep them awake for a full feeding session as well.

Other tips include:

  • Provide a diaper change when they wake up
  • Give them a bath at the same time each day
  • Ensure they're warm and snug before sleep times
